DigitalScouts was presented at the Gerontology Days 2024 – International Scientific Conference

DigitalScouts project was presented by Angela Freitas, representing SHINE 2Europe, at the Gerontology Days 2024 – International Scientific Conference. This event, held online, was co-organised by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, and the Department of Gerontology and Dementia Studies at the University of Malta.   The presentation entitled “The role of digital scouts in promoting digital literacy and participation among older adults” highlighted the co-creation process behind the design, development, and technical implementation of the DigitalScouts digital training programme. Emphasis was placed on how the programme is being tailored to meet the specific needs and preferences of both trainers and learners.  The Gerontology Days International Conference is an annual event that offers a valuable platform for educators, researchers, and practitioners to exchange knowledge and present their work on ageing from a variety of perspectives, including physiology, social science, psychology, lifelong learning, public health, and policy.

Hardware donations have arrived in Romania

In the DigitalScouts project, six partner organisations in five EU countries aim to promote the digital participation of older people by developing and testing a training programme for those who train and support older people. However, while the training content was being developed, another important step had to be taken to ensure the project’s success: from the early planning stages of the adult education project, co-funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ programme, it was clear that in Romania not only training was needed, but also equipment, which many people could not afford. The association Computertruhe e. V. was found and immediately agreed to support the DigitalScouts project. The association emerged in 2016 from a project within the Netzwerks Flüchtlinge Waldkirch (Refugee Network Waldkirch). The main aim of the association is to provide people who cannot afford hardware with equipment that has been taken out of service by companies or private individuals, thus enabling them to participate in the digital world. “The members of Computertruhe e. V. spend their free time refurbishing discarded, donated computers and other hardware, reliably destroying all personal data on them, and then making the equipment available free of charge to people in need and to other non-profit organisations.” The hardware needed to run the project in Romania was quickly processed and made available by Computertruhe e. V. “We are very pleased to be able to make a small contribution to the DigitalScouts – Enhancing the Digital Literacy and Participation in Europe project with some refurbished laptops and smartphones. We know from our own experience that older people in particular often do not use digital technologies to the extent that they could, in order to benefit adequately from the opportunities that digitalisation offers, for example in the social, cultural, political or health sectors. There is a great need for support services tailored to the needs of older people” says Marco Rosenthal, chairman of Computertruhe e. V. The project coordinator from the ISIS Institut für soziale Infrastruktur is very grateful for the straightforward help and valuable advice from the association. Getting the donations to Bucharest, however, was a challenge that was greatly underestimated. “I had thought about customs regulations, but I didn’t realise that you can’t use a parcel service to send such a donation abroad, because the built-in batteries are classed as dangerous goods,” says Jana Eckert, who is leading the project. As a solution, she decided to take her children and the hardware donations on a holiday trip by train to Vienna, where a couple who are friends of the Romanian partner organisation were on holiday and were able to take the equipment safely to Bucharest in their car. The senior citizens’ organisation Omenia, which will run the training with project partner GEAC, was delighted when the equipment arrived. The room where the pilot training for digital scouts (trainers and supporters of seniors) and the subsequent training for seniors will take place is currently being renovated, but the equipment that arrived has already been presented to some interested seniors. A technician was quickly found to install the necessary software on the laptops. Stickers were also provided to adapt the keyboards to the Romanian language. Omenia has long dreamed of having the technical equipment to run computer courses and other educational activities for its members. Once the room is ready and the ten smartphones and eight laptops are up and running, Bucharest’s ‘digital scouts’ and seniors will be able to enjoy using them and develop their teaching and digital skills together, both within and outside the project. Everyone involved in the project is excited about this long-term impact.

Celebrating International Day of Older Persons: Empowering Digital Participation

On October 1, 2024, the International Day of Older Persons was celebrated under the theme “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.” In line with this theme, DigitalScouts aims to contribute to the well-being of older individuals by training people to support them in using digital tools. This initiative empowers seniors to take advantage of opportunities for health promotion and digital participation. In today’s increasingly digitalized world, improving digital literacy is essential for participating in social life. By enhancing their digital skills through needs-based education and support services, more older adults can access digital services and technologies, helping them improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. The project recognizes the need to bridge the “digital divide,” defined by Van Dijk (2008) as the gap between those who do and do not have access to new forms of information technology. DigitalScouts aims to address this gap by: At DigitalScouts, we believe that learning is most effective when adapted to real-life contexts. We focus on promoting digital participation across various areas, such as cultural activities and financial management. In terms of health promotion, our goal is to empower older adults to use smartphones for accessing national health service apps, setting pill reminders, and utilizing telehealth services. Additionally, they will learn how to track fitness and activity levels, access exam results, and search for health information online. Discover the Romanian National Report!

On the Romanian National Report there are available findings from research focused on the digital participation of people 60+, including readiness, support structures, professionalization of supporters and examples of opportunities.   The report highlights a nuanced scenario for Romania. While the nation boasts impressive connectivity achievements, with a substantial 57% adoption of high-speed fixed broadband and a notable 87% coverage of ultra-capable networks, its digital proficiency lags behind European averages. With only 28% possessing basic digital skills compared to the EU’s 54%, and a mere 9% displaying advanced digital competencies against the EU’s 26%.  The older generation in Romania displays an active involvement in the digital sphere. Approximately 58% engage in reading digital news, 38% seek health-related information, and 31% find enjoyment through platforms like YouTube and online radio.  However, the report identifies areas for enhancement. Merely 2.1% of pensioners engage in online consultations or participate in civic and political activities such as signing petitions. Similarly, only 4% use the internet to schedule doctor’s appointments, and 7% for online banking, including mobile options.   To delve deeper into the findings from Romania we invite you to explore the Romanian National Report: http://it.digitalscouts.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/DigitalScouts_National_Report_Romania.pdf

Austrian National Report is out to be discovered!

The research efforts of DigitalScouts have unveiled insights into the digital landscape of older individuals and the support structures available to enhance their digital skills across partner countries. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolving realm of digital literacy among the older population. Analysing Austria’s digital scene in 2021, the data reveals that 76% of men aged 65-74 were active internet users, while women in the same age group showed a slightly lower rate of 57%. Despite this gender gap, impressive numbers are shown of internet adoption among older age groups. In 2022, a noteworthy 90% of individuals aged 55-64 engaged with the internet within the past year. The growth is equally remarkable among those aged 65-74. In 2012, a mere 38% of this age group accessed the internet in the last three months. By 2022, this figure had impressively risen to 70%. DigitalScouts remains committed to its mission of empowering individuals enthusiastic about guiding older adults on their digital journeys. The organization aims to harness the potential of digital technology to enrich the lives of older generations. http://it.digitalscouts.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/DigitalScouts_National_Report_Austria.pdf

Release of German National Report!

The collective efforts of the DigitalScouts team have yielded a exploration into the digital landscapes of the partner countries. The focus has been on comprehending the digital preparedness of older people demographics and the broader national technological infrastructure. It also involved the examination of support frameworks for digital engagement, as well as a nuanced exploration of the professionalization of ICT-based support for seniors. A detailed analysis of Germany’s research findings has yielded significant revelations. Household composition, notably, emerges as a crucial factor shaping trends in internet usage. It appears that solo dwellers exhibit relatively lower levels of internet engagement. Furthermore, regional variance plays a role, with a substantial 83% of individuals above 60 accessing the internet in Western Germany, compared to 72% in the Eastern region. Also, a direct correlation between age and internet use has been discerned. The younger the age, the higher the likelihood of being active online. Specifically, individuals aged 60-69 demonstrate a substantial 92% engagement, those aged 70-79 show an 82% involvement, and even among those aged 80 and above, a notable 51% exhibit varying degrees of interaction with digital platforms and internet services. Moreover, gender disparities in internet usage among the 60 and above demographic are worthy of mention. Men in this age group exhibit a higher internet usage rate at 86%, while women follow suit with a rate of 77%. The study has also unveiled a noteworthy insight: among those who abstain from internet use, a significant portion pertains to vulnerable groups grappling with health-related issues. For a more in-depth exploration of the discoveries from Germany, we welcome you to delve into the German National Report: http://it.digitalscouts.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/DigitalScouts_National_Report_Germany.pdf
